Discrete power?

I am unfamiliar with this term as it applies to remotes. Discrete (in dealing with amplifiers) means one unique amp per channel. How does this pertain to the way a remote controls a particular device?
Yes, by this ? I am labeling myself a full-on newbie. The header said no dumb questions, right?
