European user, 8206 -> 9960 upgrade WAV conversion
Hi,
I have just been given two Kameleon 9960 remotes which I'm trying to get working. I understand that it is not possible to perform the usual over-the-phone upgrade outside of the US.
I already own and use a Kameleon 8206 6-in-1 device; I have a WAV file and detailed documentation which oneforall emailed me, including all of the device codes and the "key magic" codes. The devices are:
(in-built on URC-8206)
Jvc = VCR code 0067
Sony Playstation2 = DVD code 0533
Samsung= CABLE code 1060
(in WAV upgrade file)
Liteon = DVD code 1738
Jvc = TV code 0053, 0093
Videologic = AMP code 1095
Sony Playstation2 = DVD code 0772
Is there any way that this WAV file can be converted into a WAV upgrade file for the 9960 controllers? At present I don't have a JP1 cable (or pins on the controller's boards for that matter) so I have to rely on WAV only.
If anyone can help I'd be most appreciative. I am going to play with JP1 stuff as it looks interesting and useful, but right now it's all a little over my head.
Cheers,
Simon.

Don't worry about the WAV file that you have, unless it turns out that you have a code in there that we don't have.
What you need to do is download upgrade files for all of your devices from the file section, edit them using either KM or RM so that they're formatted for the 9960 (you'll need to know whether you have the original 9960 or the later URC-9960B01) and the buttons are laid out the way you want them.
Next, fire up IR.exe and do New > Select > select the 9960, then add the upgrades and create a WAV file.

Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated! Right...
The remotes are first edition 9960, complete with motion sensor madness (which I'll soon be fixing with a switch in place of the 0 ohm resistor!
The AMP Code 1095 for the Videologic Digitheatre is not in the database, I had this problem when I looked at the JP1 stuff before with my 8206.
I'm looking through the RM software but it's all a little overwhelming... I guess I'll get there eventually!

The extender for both versions of the 9960 allows you to deal with the motion sensor in software. No surgery required (other than adding the pins for the JP1 cable) Both allow you disable it completely or to enable it only after a key has been pressed on the remote. They also allow you to change the timeout value for how long the display stays on.
It's much easier to do what you're doing via the simple JP1 cable versus the WAV upgrade. Given that you can make one for a couple of bucks and the 9960 will support using the cable (with some surgery) I'd recommend going the cable route.

this JP1 stuff is a sickness!

Post a copy of the WAV file that you have and I'll extract the code from it for you.SToP GAP wrote:The AMP Code 1095 for the Videologic Digitheatre is not in the database, I had this problem when I looked at the JP1 stuff before with my 8206.

The upgrade WAV I have is here:
http://www.acsv.net/members/stopgap/upgrade.wav
The actual list of devices I need to control are:
Cable - Samsung SMC-2110C
TV - JVC AV-28WR4EKS
Video - JVC HR-767OEK
DVD - Lite-On LVW-1105HC+
DVD - PlayStation2 (Slim)
Amp - VideoLogic Digitheatre
I've not gone through the whole section yet but there seem to be control for quite a few in the forum download section. I'm still a bit puzzled by IR... is there an easy-ish guide on how to use it somewhere? Right now I can't even find how to add in device upgrade data - I feel unusually dense using this thing! XD
The JP1 cable sounds like a very good idea but I'll have to wait a bit for that one, I live in a place where you can't even buy a single resistor (even a soldering iron is hard to come by here!!). I'll be going shopping for components in a few weeks so I'll grab some stuff then. In the mean time, I think I'll still add in a physical switch anyway so that I have both options

Are there really just 6 buttons on the amp remote, because that's all that's in the amp/1095 code that was in the WAV file. I don't know what the functions assigned to the "sel" and "surround" buttons really do, so I just assigned them to CH+ and CH- in this quickie upgrade for you to test in your URC-9960.
Upgrade Code 0 = 64 47 (Amp/1095) amp/1095 (Videologic) (KM v9.16)
5A 00 71 20 9E 29 3F 9F 87 EF 6F B7
End

End

Thanks for your posts... I've been away for a while and not able to check here. I've bitten the bullet and soldered a 6 pin header onto the remote's circuit board so I can go the cable route as it all looks more comprehensive.
Now to build the cable... is the basic parallel one suitable for this remote (and the urc-8206 for that matter)?

The URC-9960 is a traditional JP1 (EEPROM) remote, so you can use a traditional JP1 (EEPROM) cable on this, and these cables come in USB, parallel and serial versions.
The URC-8206 is a newer JP1 (Flash) remote. These cables come in USB or serial (but not parallel) versions.

Ok... so would a USB cable be sufficient for both EEPROM and flash based remotes then? I'm ok at soldering and building even complex circuits but it is such an unbelievable hassle getting components where I live without mail-ordering them, so perhaps I should buy one. Then again, the crazy man within who likes a challenge may win out and I'll build one... hehe.
I think I have the bits lying around to make the simple parallel one somewhere so maybe I'll give that a try in the mean time.

Sorry, no cable is compatible with both EEPROM and flash based remotes. Each needs their own kind of cable.
For the EEPROM based cables, it is pretty easy to scavenge the parts from discarded old PC's (if you have access to such). For the flash based, you probably need to buy parts.
Really old PC's had DB25 serial ports with an internal cable from a header on the motherboard to the DB25 on the back of the case. That internal cable, cut and rearranged, gives you most of a JP1 cable.

As Robman described, the EEPROM based remotes use one type of cable, a JP1 type in 3 flavors. The Flash based remotes use a different cable that comes in 2 flavors. Check this stickie for details HERE

Okey dokey. As the remote I'm actually trying to configure now is the 9960 I'll worry about the 8206 some other time.
I have made myself a basic parallel cable and IR reports it is working. Downloading from the remote seems to work, it reports URC-9960 Kameleon 2K EEPROM after downloading.
I have the various tools, remote master, keymap master etc. to start making up the upgrade for the new remote set-up. I don't fully understand it all yet but I'm learning as I go here... the one thing that I'm really puzzled about is using an extender.
I know physically what an extender is, but I'm not sure about a couple of things. I downloaded the 9960 Ext. 2a zip and it looks like a lot of the functionality of the remote is lost by using it, for example learned IR, theatre mode, normal device inputting etc. Is this the case or have I misunderstood? I'd like to disable the tilt sensor for sure, but I'm not sure I want to lose standard functionality of the remote.

If you don't like the extender, you can easily remove it again and get all that standard functionality back.SToP GAP wrote:I'd like to disable the tilt sensor for sure, but I'm not sure I want to lose standard functionality of the remote.
It is easiest to remove the extender if you prepare for that before installing the extender by saving to a file after downloading from the 9960 and keeping that file on your PC (I'd copy it to another folder so you don't accidentally overwrite it later).
But most of the "standard functionality" you lose is useless anyway.
As soon as you start programming Device numbers and Keymoves, etc. with ir.exe, you won't want to program them via the keypad of the remote.
I'm not certain of the 9960 extender (but pretty sure), most extenders give you powerful device selection macros that do everything you would want from Home Theater mode, but better.
Learned signals would be nice to have, but you don't need them. With the JP1 tools you can translate almost any learned signal to a KeyMove or to part of an upgrade. It will take less memory and maybe work better that way.
When you want to learn more signals later, it is easy to blow away the extender in the remote (I'll assume you backed up a copy of your eeprom image with the extender on your PC as well as that copy without) then learn some signals; download them to the PC; decode them; edit your saved file to use those decodes in KeyMoves or Upgrades; finally upload those edits back to the 9960, reinstalling the extender.
