Trying to connect a URC8820 to my computer. When the USB cable is connected to the port the USB option on the IR.exe Interface drop down menu is grayed out and get error message "Unable to find Delcom Device Driver. Downloaded what I thought was the correct driver from the files page, unzipped and placed in \Windows\system 32, but the error is still the same. Please help.

IIRC, the 8820 is a JP1.2 remote, so you would not use a JP1 (EEPROM) cable or the Delcom driver. You should be using a JP1.2 (FLASH) cable and the FTDI drivers. Furthermore, I wouldn't just copy the files to the windows system folder. I'd unzip them elsewhere and point the new device wizard to them when you plug in the cable. Then in IR, pick the JP1.x interface.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I view the driver details in device manager, it shows that the FTDI driver version 2.2.4.0 is installed and functioning correctly. As you said I do have the JP1.2/3 cable. Bottom line is though, I can't communicate through the cable. Would you please give me some ideas of other things to check? I will remove the Delcom drivers now that I know I don't need it/them.

I suspect that if your system is looking for the Delcom driver you have told it that you are using the USB JP1 interface and not the USB JP1.2/3 interface.

Are you sure that you have selected the right interface?

Don't know of any place that I have told the system what cable I have. I just plugged in the cable, and the drivers were installed. Is there there a place where I can specify the cable? I am baffled. Please help.

In IR pick JP1.x, the last option in the interface drop down.

On IR's General Tab, you can choose JP1.x or JP1 just over the Notes area. To specify a particular type of interface, go to the "Interface>" drop-down and pick yours.

Sorry to be so thick here, but I still do not understand.

The last option in the interface dropdown is USB, but it is grayed out.

Over the Notes area, I have 'Download from Remote". is this the area that you are referring to? If I check this and check ok the response is 'The interface does not appear to have power". I assume they are talking about the remote. Batts are good.

Where can I go from here?

Also, are you 100% positive that you have a JP1.2/3 (flash) USB cable and not a regular JP1 (EEPROM) USB cable?

As you implied that the Delcom drivers installed when you plugged the cable in, that tends to imply that you have a JP1 (EEPROM) USB cable.

When using a JP1.2 USB device, select JP1.x from the inerface menu. USB is for the JP1 interface3 cable.

What version of IR are you using?

If you are using the current version, just below the big download/upload buttons on the general tab and just above the notes window you should see a few radio buttons, one of which says "JP1.x" Is that selected? If not, IR is trying to read from a JP1 interface and not a JP1.2/3 interface.

If you don't see that radio button, then you are not using the most current version of IR so you need to go get it. I don't remember when the JP1.x interface support went in, but it was a while back.

What version of IR are you running? The "Interface>" drop-down list should have FOUR choices in the top section (before the horizontal line and "Driver Status" and other options):
JP1 Parallel
JP1 Serial
JP1 USB
JP1.x (USB or serial)

Have you selected the fourth one?

As for the display, in current versions of IR, below the UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD buttons there is a row of selectable choices for either: JP1.x; JP1 EEPROM:Autodetect; Force <=2K; Force >=4K.

If you do not see these, then you have a very old version of IR.exe and need to update it.

I believe JP1.2 support was added in IR 7.0 which came out in 2006. It looks like the user has a very old version of IR.

Get IR 7.15 and the RDF files from HERE. May as well download either KM or RM and the Maps and Images while you're there. You'll need them eventually.

Where did you get the version you're running now?
