JP1.x connection/transmission issues?

Post by greenough1 »

Hi,
On the new laptop (lenovo vista 32bit), I'm using a usb to serial adapter and a serial jp1.x cable from Tommy. I reported previous an issue or two with jp1.x -1 errors. The other night, I got that one occasionally as well as a write/compare difference error.

Is this from dropped packets to or from the remote? Is this common when using USB to serial adapters? Is it time to invest in a straight USB JP1.x cable? I think I remember Vicky reporting "dropped packets". Is this the symptom? Does it only seem to show up with Vista? Has a consensus formed on which driver is best for a 32bit vista system?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

You'll get those errors with low batteries. There are no issues with vista and JP1.x USB AFAIK. It's only JP1 USB cables (Delcom drivers) which can be problematic, and in that case the best driver seems to be the 03/03/2007 version.

Hi,
The batteries were fresh, I think. I even tried another set (4 AAA rayovac alkaline). Thanks,

Here's another thread about a problem similar to your's which seems to be hardware related. If so, you could try to fix it yourself, exchange it, or replace with one of Tommy's new cables as you said before. Tommy's USB JP1.x cable should work fine in vista. In any case, don't load the delcom drivers at all. Tommy's cable uses FTDI drivers which work very well.

EDIT: I should've read your initial post more closely. I assumed you had a DIYGadget cable since I didn't remember Tommy selling serial cables. My link probably won't apply.

Hi,
I did buy a DIYGadget serial cable, that didn't work. Tommy kindly "repaired" it for me (really built me a very nice one - Thanks Tommy). I bought a USB to serial adapter awhile ago but didn't need it because my older laptop had a serial port. That laptop died, and I'm using a new one with no serial ports, just USB. That's the back story.

I did swap batteries again form a fresh pack and had no transmission error. I did get a JP1.x -1 error for the first upload attempt of an IR session. AFter that no problems.

I'll check those threads and then decide. Thanks for your input.

Best,
jeff
