iPod Touch controlling ALL my AV-equipment. Possible?

Post by opet »

Hello peeps,

I'm having this great idea of having one remote controlling all my equipment. And while some remotes like the Harmony etc. is good, why not use an iPod Touch? With software like RemoteBuddy, you can control more or less everything on your mac.

Sooo. As I've never done this before, I don't really know what I need to do or how difficult it would be. I've been googling around and come across LIRC. It's written for Linux, but I've seen people compiling it on OSX as well.

Would it be possible to have RemoteBuddy sending commands (applescript, or something) into LIRC, having it translate the commands and output the commands through an IR-flasher (that the right name for it?) to my amplifier, DVD-player etc.? If so, it would mean that I could sit in one room and control my whole flat with my iPod Touch through WiFi. AND I could hide all the AV-equipment.

Any views, comments or good ideas? I'm quite new to all this, so I was hoping on some expert help :)

Thanks in advance,

Øyvind

You can have the best remote control ever created by using your iPod touch or iPhone as the control. Crestron released this software recently but you would still need a small crestron processor that you could connect an IR block to. It will be all WIFI based therefore you would be able to get modules to control lights, HVAC, etc. One downfall, you will need a Crestron developer to create the interfaces for you.

there was a guy on the iphone hacking group a while back that created an "audio to IR" thing that stuffed into the audio jack of a iphone and controlled stuff. (I think he called it iCouchPotato)

But there is no IR in the devices, so whatever you do you have to either make IR or have a receiver that makes the IR somewhere else.
this JP1 stuff is a sickness!
