De-oiling remote

Post by andyross »

I have a nicely set up 8910 that has so far outlasted every other JP1 remote I've had before (about 3 years).

The problem is that over time, oils (yuck) are accumulating inside. I've opened it up and tried cleaning it multiple times. I've tried wiping it off everything I can, but after a month or two, I start having keypress problems.

Is there any cleaner anyone has tried that I can soak or spray the rubber and case with that will fully get rid of the oils without damaging the carbon contacts?

I do have a spare 8910, but I'd rather not use it unless I have to as the 8910 is getting hard to find. I haven't really researched newer models to see what is equivalent, but it would take some work as I use the extender and several custom codes.

Here is what I did with my 5-year old URC 7562:
1) open the case
2) take out the board that holds all electronic components
3) put all the plastic and rubber parts in a hot water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid
4) dry in the oven at 50 degrees centigrade.

and your remote will feel as if it were new.
