IR problems in Vista with Tommy's USB JP1 Interface
After some correspondence with Tommy and Nils, there seem to be several reports of the USB JP1 interface not working in Vista. Version 4.0.0.0 of the delcom driver appears to load fine. Vista reports the driver running properly, and IR says driver status is good. Ran IR 7.09 with an 8910. Interface check says the interface is working properly, but Upload/Download to/from Remote consistently gets "DeviceIO control failed in I2CWrite" error.
The same hardware/software works fine on one of my XP machines without errors. However, it fails on a second XP machine and on Vista. The machines that fail are both dual processor, whereas the working machine is single processor/core. I'm not sure that has any bearing, but delcom's latest release notes indicate that they have a beta driver that fixes problems with multiprocessor/multicore machines. I've requested copies to try and will report back.
I had started another thread stating success with Vista, but have since deleted it. I did have some initial success with an old driver from Nils, but it never worked consistently. And now, after so many uninstalls/reinstalls, doesn't work at all.
I'm starting this thread mainly to document the problem and hopefully get some ideas as to what could be wrong. I'll report back with my experience with the beta driver, if I'm able to get it.

I can't seem to get it to work either on Vista, although I'm running Vista in a Virtual Machine on my Mac. The USB JP1.x cable works fine (although I have to clip pin 5 on my JP1.3 remote and don't have any tools yet)
Interestingly enough, my original JP1 USB Delcom cable does work under Vista with the updated drivers that Tommy sent me. I haven't given XP a try yet.

this JP1 stuff is a sickness!

Well, delcom has just released a new driver (4.2.0.0). Still doesn't work for me in Vista. Haven't tried it yet in XP.
Not sure if this is related or not, but I'm also having issues with upload to an Atlas OCAP 1056 JP1.3 remote using Tommy's USB JP1.X interface in XP. Here's what I posted in my original thread:
Things are getting more interesting now.
I now also have an Atlas OCAP 1056 JP1.3 remote. After performing the pin-5 bend, I am seeing the same issues. The upload seems to process for longer time before indicating the error. I am able to download from the remote but not upload to it. I'm using the RDF/MAPs from the Atlas RDF's Maps, and Images (updated 05 OCT 2007) fileset.
The system I'm trying this on is a Dual-Core Dell D820 Laptop running Windows XP.
I also noticed a thread in the Software forum IR Problems in Vista with Tommy's USB JP1 interface that indicates others having very similar issues with not being able to upload when they can download fine. I'm not sure if they're using the JP1 or JP1.X interface.
This weekend I will see if I can rebuild an ancient P3 box with Windows XP to see if that helps at all. I'll also try it on a single-core AMD Barton Vista 32bit box to see if that helps any.

I did some more investigation this weekend with my USB JP1 cables and have some more data.
Both of these tests were done with IR 7.09 to make the comparisons consistent. I tested the 3.1 Delcom drivers and the new 4.2 Delcom drivers. I used an old URC6131 as the test vehicle since that's the only JP1 remote that I have here in CA.
Configuration 1: MacBook Pro running Parallels desktop 2.5 and Windows XP SP2. (Intel Core2Duo processor, 512MB memory for the VM)
Delcom 3.1 Driver:
Old JP1 interface from DIY Gadget works fine, will download and upload to the remote.
New JP1 interface from Tommy (Thumb interface) does not work, I get the message that "the remote is not acknowledging signals from the interface"
Delcom 4.2 driver:
Neither interface will work, both return SDA being held low. I have verified that if I then downgrade back to 3.1 the old interface works again.
Configuration 2: Dell Latitude L400 laptop running Windows XP SP2
The same results as above with the Macbook Pro.
Didn't get a chance to test Vista (running in Parallels on my iMac) but I was getting the same results in the past with the 3.1 driver as above ("the remote is not acknowledging signals from the interface") so I guess that we're looking at the same results. The old interface with 3.1 has worked with Vista in the past on my Core2Duo iMac.
The distressing part here is that the "new" 4.2 driver from Delcom, which if you read the release.txt file says that the 4.x drivers were there to deal with multiprocessors, seems to break the JP1 interfaces from IR. I couldn't get anything to work with those drivers. (and the MacBook/Parallels/XP configuration this was the first driver I installed so I'm not even dealing with some kind of driver collision)

Thanks for the update. I was also able to do some more testing as well, and have results similar to yours.
- Delcom 4.2 driver not working in dual processor vista or dual processor XP (SDA being held low error in both cases, as soon as upload/download is pressed)
- Delcom 3.1 driver working perfectly in dual processor XP.
- Delcom 3.1 driver finally working pretty well in vista after several reinstalls. Ocassionally get an error on upload (data read differs from data written), but works most of the time.
Obviously Delcom has broken something in the later drivers. So the bottom line is 3.1 driver works in XP and may work in Vista if you're lucky. Later drivers are hit or miss in XP, but certainly won't work in Vista. Download the 3.1 driver from the file section here, and if it doesn't work, you're out of luck.
One last thing - Tommy's interface is fantastic. All the problems seem to be caused by the Delcom drivers not working properly in Vista.
