Did I do it "right"

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Did I do it "right"

Post by vmac1996 »

First of all I have a All for one URC-9910. I built a jp1 cable, and everything works fine. What I did is I made macros for turning my tv from Sat. input to DVD input, and turning RCVR on and seting it to the right input, and turning the DVD player on. Then another for turning evrything off and returning to SAT. input on the TV.
Also a Macro for turning Closed Captions on, and another for turning them off.

What I was wondering is; was this the best way to do it? Is there another way that would be easier? I haven't used Key movers at all, or protocols. I don't really understand them yet (I am very much a newbie). I don't have internet at home, so I have to read at lunch time at work, and download the programs to a thumb drive and then take home.

Thanks for the help
Matt

Matt, it sounds like you are getting your job done. Isn't it great! Now just keep thinking "wouldn't it be nice", and then come back and figure out how to do it.

For my first 3 years of JP1 involvement I just had some macros like yours. Then last year I got some new equipment that needed upgrades. It turned out that it wasn't that hard. BUT I needed more keymove space so I ventured into extenders  Again not so bad, but then even with all that extra keymove space I couldn't put the functions on keys that made sense. That's when I got seriously addicted. I needed to write an extender so that I could stack functions 3 deep on certain keys on my old 7800 remote. Fortunately for me, ElizabethD did some testing for me. Working with her test files I found that there was so much more that can be done with JP1. Now I won't own a remote that doesn't have and extender! I'm seriously addicted here. There is so much more that you can do with your remote. All I can say is DARE TO DREAM.

Hi Matt,
You're the ultimate judge about whether you're doing things right, if the remote works the way you want. Even with the extender (I use it on both my 8811 and the 8910), at the end of the day, it's the macros that get the job done!

Best,
jeff
