Thanks folks. I don't have a single functional cable right now hence the reason I am not getting any jp1 work done now.

My USB cables do not work on my new laptop (Dell d620 with USB and serial only) since I can't get the driver (USBIODS) to install on XP Pro sp2. Not even Delcom is providing any help. It does recognize it as the right device but XP just won't install the drivers no matter which way I try. My next step on that is to reinstall XP but it is a company laptop.

My jp1.2 interface never worked consistently since it is one of Tommy's initial experiments with mini circuit boards.

I don't have a parallel port so those don't work.

And I gave my jp1.1 serial cable to my son.

Oh yeah, I just don't want to order a jp1.2 and mod it myself since I am just not that good at it. Pretty much a software guy.

What about the missing components?

Q1/D1/R1 aren't needed.

I just received another jp1.2 serial cable from DIY and tried this jumper and it did not work as a jp1.1. Basically I located pin 1 and counted over to 4 and 5 so maybe I got the pins wrong. Maybe you can point me to the right pins on his PCB or a better way to figure it out. By the way, I didn't solder it and just used a clip between the two so that may have some impact.

I'm not familiar with his PCB. The numbering should be 1-2,3-4,5-6 so all odd or even pins are on one side. Pin 1 is +V. Pin 3 is GND.
Code:

     ----
 ---|    |---
|  5  3  1   |
|  6  4  2   |
 ------------

Putting a jumper between 4 and 5 does not seem to work as a standard jp1 cable with either a 2116 or a 9960. It will also no longer work as a jp1.2 either.

I am using the lastest beta of IR and tried all different options for the interface.

I must be doing something wrong if that is suppossed to work.

JP1.1 is NOT JP1. Those are three different interfaces, not two.

You can't add a jumper or any other few parts to turn a jp1.2 cable into a JP1. They are totally different designs.

JP1.1 and JP1.2 are related interfaces and one design can do both.

Yeah, I guess I knew that. I was just so focused on getting some form of jp1 cable working for my 2116 etc. I had a bad brain check and was ready to try anything.

Now, does anyone have a jp1 serial they want to get rid of?

Thanks but isn't that the parallel printer port cable? I have a few of them but what I need is a serial cable.

I need the serial cable for jp1 (NOT jp1.1 or jp1.2) since I can't get the USB cable installed (driver won't install) and don't have a printer port just serial and USB.

OK. I lost the bit where you had no parallel port (that was many posts ago). I thought the problem was simply that you were (incorrectly) trying to use a JP1.x cable for a JP1 remote.

I've never seen any of the vendors selling the JP1 serial cable. I've never had one myself, and I'm with you on being unable to make one for myself.

Fortunately my new desktops still came with parallel ports, and although my new laptops (really my kids' but my son lets me use his Rolling Eyes ) don't have parallel ports, I have an old laptop (running WinME, no less) that is just fine for JP1-ing - so until it dies completely, I'm OK.

Good luck getting (re)connected.

As I read the boards here, it is my perception that the JP1 USB cable is far from a reliable interface. I wonder if there still needs to be some tweak to that design. I read of more probelms with that thing than anything I've ever seen with the simple parallel interface. (...or is it really simply a case of Bill Gates outsmarting all who may need to install that mischievous Delcom driver?)

Nils,
I am placing an order from Mouser anyway, and I can order the parts for that Serial jp1 cable (I found Tommy's design on the Yahoo site). I would assemble that and test it for you if you want. Just PM me to let me know if you are still interested.
Jim

Thanks for the offer. I did PM you.

I am also gonna beat this USB driver thing somehow so it will not only help me but help the few others that still have had the same problem.
