first..i'm a total noob to jp1.
i've got 2 of theseURC-7800 , i see a connector array of 6 solder points from the battery compartment.
is that a jp1?
can i backup and re-install my codes from that?
one just lost all its codes i dont know why..
never had any troubles before i've worn them both out from about 5-6 years use.
looking at replacing them.. anyone got recomends for a pair of affordable backup'able remotes, i like the Cinema7 because it handles 7 or more devices..
I found some RCA RCU810 but i dont really like LCD displays.i'm too hard on the things to keep a working LCD..i suppose its still usable if i break the LCD?
is it a jp1 remote? do i need jp1 just to backup and restore? |

The URC-7800 is absolutely a JP1 remote, just solder in a little 6-pin header and you're good to go. The RCU810 is also a JP1 remote and it too needs a 6-pin header soldered in.
As for current remotes with similar capabilities to the URC-7800, I would recommend the URC-8811, which is a non-LCD 8-device learning remote, and it's also JP1 ready out of the box.
JP1 not only lets you back up and restore your remote settings, it also lets you program the remote to control just about anything. _________________ Rob

thanks Robman,
URC-8820?
theres good price on these..
how do i find out of its a jp1?
also, uses 2 AAA batteries, does that make it a weaker signal?
my 7800 uses 4.
also interested in adding a remote dongle to my PC to control WinAmp or run some .bat files etc.
where can i get one of those for cheep? |

The URC-8820 is a JP1.2 remote, which we don't support yet. If you want JP1 capabilities, you'll need one of the slightly older models, like the URC-8810. _________________ Rob

is there a "rebuild" kit for remotes?
I cleaned the pad and circuit board inside but
one of my button takes a really hard press to
make it work
did i clean the pad too good or not enough? is there some replacement pads i can get? I guess i could
take one from a non-used button no?
is this easily done?
I can probably tear apart a cheepo remote for a
pad or 2?
someone point me to JP1 mod and cable guide
for the 7800
thank for the help.. |

The underside of the pad is a conductive surface, and the place on the PCB that it contacts has a pattern of conductive ink.
The conductive coating of the underside of the pad can wear off. If you clean the PCB after moderate damage and/or heavy use, you might take off the conductive ink. In either case you'd get the symptoms you described, and the material used to correct it is the same:
There is conductive paint sold in kits for automobile rear window defroster repain and somethines in kits for repairing remote controls. It is discussed (with links) in several threads here. That conductive paint can replace the conductive coating on the underside of each key. If necessary, and with more care, it can replace the conductive ink on the PCB. Look at the distinctive pattern of conductive ink on the PCB under working keys and see (probably requiring a magnifying glass) if it is cracked or missing on the problem key(s). If the PCB is OK, assume the problem in on the flexible pad. That's safer and easier to paint with conductive paint and more often is the side that fails. |

that link doesnt help much..
do i need to solder a chip or a a chip socket in the 6 holes or what?
that page kinda like peters out.
"If you see 6 holes rather than a 6-pin connector, you remote probably needs extra parts to be JP1 compatible."
anyone got a guide that tells how to do it? |

Maybe you need to ask better questions if you want to be sure the answer is what you're looking for. I think that page answers the question that you asked: "is there a guide to JP1 this thing?" _________________ Rob

If you're question is actually "how do I solder a JP1 connector onto the URC-7800?"...
1) Open the remote
2) Apply flux to the 6 holes
3) Position the 6-pin in place
4) Solder it.
5) Close the remote.
That's all there is to it. _________________ Rob
