This is really just a curious question, since JP1 capability makes it largely irrelevant. I just like learning stuff. Several posts have recommended purchasing a 6131nw and sending it back to UEI asking for some code so that they will send back a remote with header and EEPROM installed. My question is, what happens to the poor un-JP1-enlightened sap who actually needs UEI to add a code, then has to do a 981 reset? Does he have to send it back to get the code reinstalled? Or does UEI somehow flash the ROM in the processor?

JP1 remotes modded by UEI - lose their codes on a reset?

The short answer is yes, a 981 reset will wipe out any upgrades.
The longer answer is that a 981 reset will actually just reset the pointer addresses found at $0100 in the EEPROM, so while this will prevent the remote from being able to find the upgrades anymore, a JP1 expert can probably recover most of the lost data by hand.

Yup, the 981 reset is a secret un-documented function, the reset that gets mentioned in the manuals is the 980 reset, which will NOT delete the upgrades.
