Newbie IR6.0 queston

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Newbie IR6.0 queston

Post by tideman76 »

Hello all, this forum has been instrumental in my understanding of JP1. I have successfully downloaded from my remote in IR.exe, added extended codes, and macros and uploaded the changes to the remote. I was amazed when everything worked.

The remote in question in the URC-9910. When I download from the remote, the devices window on the General tab gets populated. I understand the first 8 entries as they correspond to the device buttons on the remote. After the first 8 entries, there are entries listed as db-8, db-9, db-10, db-11, db-12, db-13, db-14. I know I can change the type of device that each one corresponds to, but what are these?

I used RM to create an upgrade for my DCT-6412 cable box with some extra functionality. When I used the devices tab on IR and pasted the hex code and created a device upgrade, I noticed that IR added several keymoves with the initial device being db-14 and this does correspond to the devices list on the general tab. db-14 is of the type cable. I am guess that db stands for device button, but I would appreciate some clarification.

I can post my "in-development" IR file if needed.

I would like to thank the owners and operators of this site and the yahoo user group for the wealth of knowledge that is available for JP1.

db-8 though db-14 are basically virtual device buttons that can be used to store device upgrades that you do not want to put on a normal device button. They are good for storing functions to be used as keymoves etc. for later use in macros.

The reason you got keymoves generated with your upgrade is because there were probably button assignments for buttons that are not generally active for the device type you selected. For example, typically a TV device does not have fast forward, record etc. so if you put a function on 1 of them in RM, KM or IR they will become keymoves.

By the way, if you generated keymoves on db-14 make sure you did not select that device accidentally when you installed your upgrade.

And, just a side note. This forum and the yahoo jp1 forums are associated and are the only jp1 forums.

db-8 through db-14 are phantom device buttons with some subset of the functionality of a normal device button. Since they are phantom, it is a little tricky (especially without an extender) to define a a way for the user to select them.

I don't completely follow your description of what happened in IR, but maybe I can explain it as follows:
The Device button shown just to the left of Device Type isn't really part of the KeyMove.
The Device Type and Setup code together indicate the source for the KeyMove. If you happen to have a Device Button which is programmed to that same Device Type and Setup code, IR will show you that in the Device Button column as a convenience. It is intended to help you remember what the Setup code is for.

Thanks for the info guys.

Nils, I knew the two were inter-related; I was just trying to give credit to both at the same time.

I feel like a sponge that can not hold any more water. I have read and learned so much information about JP1 in the last 3 days that I am programming my remote all sorts of funky ways just play with IR.

I am still afraid of TOADTOG and LDKP though.

I am trying to figure out how to upload my IR file just as a reference.

I can not find a .rmdu file for an Integra DTR-7 RCVR. Does anyone know of a close Onkyo match? The ones I have loaded into RM do not seem to very close. Different protocol and setup codes.

Thanks again, THIS IS AWESOME, right up a geeks alley.

My IR file is located at

Johnfine, I understand why the keymoves were added. I modified the rmdu file in RM and then copied the output hex and keymoves to the device upgrade in IR. I was curious as to why the intial device showed up as db-##. But with the previous explanations, I believe I understand the db devices now.

Thank you both.
