Here is one of several threads where that was previously discussed
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2856&highlight=24c16
The 6012 has only two batteries, which may drop down to 1 volt per battery in normal use before they're too low to use. So make sure you select an eeprom that can be read at 2 volts. Don't worry if the part is spec'ed for lower speed at that low voltage (as some are). As long as it can read at all at low voltage it's fine.
The normal capacity is 2kx8 (16K bits). Selecting exactly that capacity will simplify your use of JP1 software.
If your requirements are really as simple as they seem, an 8K bit eeprom would also work but the price difference is insignificant. A 32Kbit or larger eeprom can also be used (with certain extra setup work required) but I'm sure you have no need at all for such extra capacity. |

Hi guys:
I got a pre-made JP1 cable, and I ordered some eeproms from Mouser. Finally found someplace to get a 6011 to try. I soldered the eeprom onto it today and muddled my way through getting all the right software pieces.
Configured an upgrade for my device, although I was fuzzy on what I was doing. Made me appreciate my MX-700's software <grin>.
Downloaded my first set of test keys, it worked!
Now I just need to find a place to get the 6011's, 8011's or similar cheap and consistently. Too bad my Walmarts don't have them anymore. Any other suggestions on a source? Happy to add the eeproms, it was painless since I have a nice stationary iron with a tiny tip.
And, just wanted to say thanks for the patient help above, much appreciated.
Best,
Scott |

I've sucessfully modded the 6011 using the eeprom above. The 6011 isn't as easy to find as the 6131N. Is the mod for the 6131N the same thing?
Thanks,
Scott |

The eeprom and the 6-pin header part of the mod is the same.
The jumper you should have added to the 6011 as part of the mod isn't the same. IIRC the 6131 doesn't need a jumper added at all. |

Great, thanks John. Circuit City has these albeit not the cheapest, I can swing by and pick them up as needed. Thanks again, Scott |

If you are referring to the URC-6131NW (as opposed to the older URC-6131), then only the EEPROM & header are required. The EEPROM is installed with pin 1 pointing to the bottom of the remote. _________________ Mike England |

Thanks Mike, I'll pick one up. I expect it's the NW version. So far, on both the other's I've put the eeprom on (a 6011 and a 8011), the circuit board silkscreen showed the proper IC orientation (head down), but thanks for the tip. Best, Scott |

I don't know what mods the URC-6131NW requires as I haven't seen one yet, but the standard URC-6131 model just needs an EEPROM and header also.
If you need to order the URC-6131 in quantity, let me know and I might be able to help you out. _________________ Rob

Hi Rob: Thanks for the info. I'm too chicken to order them in quantity, may sit on them too long. My most typical user will be someone who needs a already programmed low end JP1 (i.e. 6011/6131) to use to program their own higer end learning remote (i.e. MX-500). I found the 6131 at the local Circuit City for $12.99, that won't make or break me on one-off's.
