Folks,

The OEM remote control for my Panasonic SC-HT810V "Home Theater" system has buttons for toggling between AM & FM and between DVD & VCR modes. Unfortunately, the lack of discrete commands for these functions makes it more difficult to set up my 8810w (WalMart) remote.

I'm planning to do some experimenting to see if I can find these discrete code. Before starting this (perhaps long) process, though, it would be nice to know if these codes are even likely to exist! Would anyone have any thoughts on whether or not I'm likely to be on a "wild goose" chase?

Thanks,
Wayne

Are you sure the function for DVD vs. VCR is a toggle function? It could be a toggle button on the original remote but a discrete function. Did you learn the command sent by that button on two successive presses of the original remote (to two different keys in the 8810)?

You list that command as 160.0:163. Every other Panasonic device I've seen that has command 160.0:163 has it as the discrete input select for the DVD input (typically they have 160.0:158 as the discrete input select for VCR).

I'd be quite surprised if AM/FM have discretes, and it's a real big field to look for those geese in.

Several devices that have an AM/FM toggle also have discretes for each, but I don't recall if there are Panasonic codes for these. I'd advise taking a look at Elizabeth Deal's spreadsheet of Panasonic codes to see if they're listed.

Like John said, to go looking for discretes with one of these Panasonic devices will take alot of work as there are several device codes and sub-device codes that you'd need to search through.

Unfortunately, I've confirmed (by programming my 8810w) that device 160.0 with an EFC of 227 is, indeed, a TOGGLE. I also tried your OBC of 158 (=254 EFC) and it does not appear to do anything....

I was going to try a few EFC's around 227, since Power discretes are usually quite close (in EFC value) to the Power toggle command. Perhaps the same "logic" might apply to other discretes... Just a thought.

Perhaps some of these OBCs will work in listed or other subdevices:

160.000:158   VCR2

I don’t have time right now to reduce this to non-repeating numbers.

Rob taught me here to try numbers around a known OBC not EFC Smile .

Folks,

Thanks for all the info! I've been out of town for a couple days, so I have not been able to try out any of the functions that you suggested. Hopefully, I'll be able to do some testing this weekend & will keep you posted.

The bad news:

- None of the above codes (nor some additional ones that I tried) seem to be the discrete codes needed to select DVD, VCR, AM, or FM.

The good news:

- The DVD mode can be "forced" via a macro that make the DVD the active device and then invokes the DVD "play" command (device 176.0, EFC=055)

- The VCR mode can be "forced" via a macro that make the VCR the active device and then invokes the VCR "play" command (device 144.0, EFC=055)

I still don't have a way to "force" AM or FM, but that isn't too major a problem (for me, anyway).

I have the same system (SC-HT810V), using a URC-6131 (JP1-modified) remote w/extender. I also have a Panasonic CT-32HXC43 HDTV with two component inputs and 4 composites, as well as a Comcast/Motorola HDTV cable box/converter.

The short answer is that while I have not been able to find any discrete "VCR" or "DVD" selection codes, in macros I select VCR mode by first sending the FM/AM toggle, then VCR/DVD. ("FM" is always selected first with the "FM/AM" button, and "VCR" is always first with the "VCR/DVD" button).

How do I get the FM/AM code, you ask? Well, I sent my remote in for an upgrade, and got it back with (among others) Audio/Receiver device code 1548. Using this device code, the FM/AM toggle is on the "2" button, and the DVD/VCR button is on the "9" toggle.

I assigned 3 device buttons on the remote to the SC-HT810V:
- The "DVD" button using DVD/VCR code 0490
- The "VCR" button using DVD/VCR code 1162
- The "AUD" button using Audio Receiver code 1548

My "Cable TV" macro contains the following steps:
- Swith the TV to Component Input 1 (from my Cable Box)
- <AUD> <2> <9> (i.e. "FM/AM", followed by "VCR/DVD")
- <VCR> <0> <1> <CH-> (switch to channel 1, then CH- to get auxillary input - i.e. get sound via the RCA plugs between my cable box and the SC-HT810V).

My DVD macro is a little simpler:
- Switch the TV to Component Input 2 (from the SC-HT810V DVD output)
- <DVD> <Play>

Likewise, the VCR macro:
- Switch the TV to Composite Video Input 3 (from the SC-HT810V composite output)
- <VCR> <Play>

My "Radio" macro simply contains:
- <AUD> <2> ("FM/AM" toggle).

I will fool around a little to find out if some of the device codes that came with the original URC-6131 or URC-8811 remotes (both of which I have lying around; the 8811 is identical to your 8810w) can be coerced into providing some of the functionality of the Audio subsystem on the SC-HTxxx series (I believe the SC-HT790V, SC-HT800V, SC-HT810V, SC-HT820V are pretty much identical, with the exception that the 820 also has/needs codes for selecing the active disk in the DVD changer)

Also, if you are interested in the "1548" and other device upgrades I got from Universal Remotes after sending mine in for the upgrade, let me know. I can probably find a way to export them into a format usable by Keymap Master and/or IR.EXE.

For that matter, if you are interested, I can send you my entire .IR file. Although it is specific to the 6131 (with an 8K EPROM and JP1 upgrade -- this particular model can be bought from e.g. Surf Remote; follow the link on the main page of "hifi-remote.com"), you should be able to at least open this file in "IR.EXE" and find the appropriate EFC and HEX commands to control the FM/AM button and other features of the SC-HT810V. (If you happen to have a Panasonic HDTV, you may also be interested in the 128.4 device and the discrete codes for Component Inputs 1 and 2).

In any case, Good Luck!

tor,

Thanks ever so much for the detailed description of your configuration! I've worked out a somewhat similar setup for my system which consists of:

- The Panasonic SC-HT810V HT unit
- An older JVC AV-20820 (20") television set
- A "Roady2" satellite radio receiver
- A Technics turntable + Shure magnetic cartridge + external preamp
- An RCA VH-915 video/audio selector w/remote control

I needed the 4-input video/audio selector since the HT810V has only one set of external input jacks (and I need to select between the Roady2 & the turntable).

I'm using the 2K X3 extender for my 8810w remote and have set up the Power key so that a "short press" turns on & configues the currently-selected device (see below) , while a "long press" turns OFF that device. I'm using the following device selection keys:

TV [Device code 1053] - Play TV, with sound coming from a pair of amplified speakers (not the 810V) connected directly to the TV's "audio out" jacks. NOTE: THE TV SPEAKERS ARE PERMANENLY LEFT 'OFF', so I don't worry about them in any of my setup scripts.

DVD [Device code 1520] - Play a DVD or a CD

VCR [Device code 1519] - Play a VCR tape

RCVR/AMP [Device code 1518] - Listen to FM

SAT [Device code 0730] - Listen to an XM Roady2 radio

AUX [No device code needed] - Listen to records

Everything seems to be working well for me, as I gather it is for you. My only regret is that there don't appear to be any JP1 programmable remotes with buttons whose names can be assigned by the program. I know that most high-end remotes provide LCD screens that can be modified, but those remotes don't seem as easy or flexible to program...

Please let me know if you would like any additional details on the above macros, etc.

Best wishes,
Wayne
