Xbox upgrade not working

I have been trying to program both my 15-1994 and my Kenwood R720 (which is an OEM of the Outlow remote) to control my xbox with no luck.

I have a microsoft kit not a knock off.

I have downloaded the xbox.txt and the latest fixes, and I perform the following steps.
- load the xbox.txt file in KM
- change the remote to either the 15-1994 or the Outlaw
- I copy the upgrade device code
- paste the upgrade code in IR
- assign the DVD device with the right code
- upload to the remote

it just doesn't seem to work.

I have been coding different remotes for different devices with JP1 for the last two years so I am pretty savy with it and I have created my own KM files as well.

from reading all the different posts about the xbox upgrade, it seems that I am doing the right thing, but I seem to be the only one having this problem as far as I can tell.

Can anyone help?

You should be able to use the built in DVD/0522 code to work Xbox. I can't tell from your descriptions what you might have done wrong with the upgrade.

If you have the kit, that means you have the Xbox remote, in which case you should learn some of the buttons using your 15-1994. This will confirm what sort of signal it's using. If it shows up as RCA device code 5, that just confirms that both the upgrade and the DVD/0522 code should work. If it shows up as something else, this means that they've started using a new code and we'll need to start from scratch.

Does "kit" mean a remote control and an IR receiver that lets the xbox understand that remote control?

If not, what do you mean?

If so, then does the Microsoft remote control work?

You can learn a few signals from the Microsoft remote control into the 15-1994 and decode them with IR.EXE to see if they are the RCA signals we expect.

You can also learn a few signals from the upgraded Outlaw remote into the 15-1994 to see if those are the correct RCA signals.

The xbox kit is the xbox remote and the IR receiver.

I have tried to learn signal from the xbox remote with the 15-1994 to confirm the RCA protocol but it doesn't seem to learn anything.

The learning function is working, I tested it with other remotes and it works fine. I suspect that the xbox remote I have uses a different protocol that is not supported by the 15-1994 and that's why it can't learn it.

I can't seem to explain it.

I have tried the DVD/0522 code and it does not work either.

If you can find a site that shows the particular kit you bought, could you post a link to it please. Are you 100% sure this remote is an IR remote rather than an RF remote? In other words, do you need a direct line of sight between the remote and it's receiver for it to work?

It definitely needs line of site, it's not an RF remote. One of the reasons I want to use my own is that with the xbox remote I need to be less than 8 feet from the xbox and at a fairly visible angle.

I don't recall the site I bought it at, but it was an ebay store in the Toronto, Canada area.

it has the Xbox logo at the bottom of the remote all in black.
I could take a digital photo of it if that helps.

Maybe the batteries in the xbox remote are defective.

Weak batteries in the transmitting remote will prevent learning long before they're weak enough to have noticable problems operating the target device. Then as the batteries get even weaker, the working range to the target device should go down before they stop working entirely.

I was chatting via email with a former OFA custoemr support rep (Mr E from the Remote Central forums) and he said that his standard answer for some people went something like this...

1) Check the batteries
2) Check the batteries again
3) And finally, check them one more time!

I can't tell you how many times we've tried digging into some weird problems only to find it was the batteries. One time somebody bought a remote from me to replace their broken remote, so I gave them a break on the price as they traded in the broken remote.

When the broken remote arrived it still had the batteries in it so I verified that it did the weird stuff that they described. I then replaced the batteries and it was as good as new. I didn't have the heart to tell them exactly what was wrong with their remote!

I have actually seen a remote start sending random commands without any buttons being pushed when the batteries got too low. (this keeps the set from responding to correct commands because of the constant incorrect signals)

Since I get calls from people about their TVs and VCRs concerning remote problems I would add another battery check : make sure you try it with a battery that is NOT a Mallory, Duracell, or Coppertop. In the last 25 years literally half of the non-working portable products in my shop had brand new dead Duracells.

For anyone who uses alot of batteries, I would definitely recommend having a battery tester on hand, it completely takes the guess work out of it.
