Some months ago I set up a JP1 remote for a friend who had a Sony STR-DE885 receiver. (I posted the upgrade for this in the files area.) While everything seemed to work as well as it did with the original remote, the overall range was poor. The volume seldom worked reliably from more than 4 or 5 feet away, even with the original remote.
After poking around in the receiever, and even substituting a different IR receiver module, there appeared to be nothing electrically wrong. Range was just poor, even when other Sony remotes were tried. On a hunch, I loaded a patched version of the standard Sony protocol into the JP1 remote, and suddenly the receiver started working great. Volume worked from across the room, pointed at walls, etc., just like you would normally expect.
So, if you are experiencing this sort of problem with a Sony receiver, try using this protocol with an upgrade instead. The timing has been altered slightly from the standard Sony values. Code: | Upgrade Protocol 0 = 00 CA (S3C8+)
3A 8A 31 8B 14 F5 15 05 07 02 3F 01 31 01 13 01
31 57 D0 04 97 01 31 00 03 08 05 76 06 01 6B 04
20 01 10 C0 10 C0 FB 03 E6 12 08 8D 01 49

How did you know which values to change, and whether to increase or decrease them? _________________ Rob

As you got the remote farther from the receiver, the on times tended to increase (this is fairly normal for IR receivers) until it stopped decoding. My assumption was that the firmware in the receiver was coded incorrectly such that it needed to see shorter on times.
The patched protocol shortens the on time (IIRC, about 50 uS) and lengthens the off time such that the total bit cell time is the same as normal. I tried 2 or 3 other values, but this one worked best. It's been working flawlesly for more than 8 months now. Just another example of the flexibility of JP1! 8) _________________ Mike England |

I'd be curious to know if other Sony devices work better or worse with this. If everything works better we might want to offer this to UEI as a patch to the official exec.
Very good catch, by the way Mike. _________________ Rob

He also had a Sony DVD player, but I never tried patching the Sony20 protocol, so I don't know how it would have impacted the DVD player. I've never tried it on other Sony equipment, but if an opportunity presents itself in the future, I'll be sure to see how it affects things. _________________ Mike England |

I have a Sony TV and camcorder, so I might get a chance to try it on those. _________________ Rob
