Help with a Simple Interface

A couple of years ago, I made a simple interface that has served me well with my URC8800. I recently purchased a 8910 and the interface seems to be failing (it still works with my 8800 if I set the compatibility settings for IR to WinNT4).

Now with the 8910 ... regardless of the settings ... I get a "No response from remote" message. I have tried with new, old and without batteries. Flipping the connector gives the "always reading 1 on inverted input S7" message.

There is one odd signature. When the batteries are in, all of the LCD display elements light up soon after plugging the cable into the remote. If I then run the Interface Check and get the error message, I can remove the cable and reconnect (while the error window is still up) and the LCD doesn't display all of its elements until slightly after I clear the error message.

Also the remote, other than the JP1 interface, works well.

Any ideas about where to start troubleshooting this (I'm a little fuzzy since I made this cable so long ago)?

P.S. - This is on a desktop and downloading with autocheck disabled doesn't work either.

If you made it a long time ago, you probably used 10k resistors. You might want to try swapping them with 1k resistors. It could be that the EEPROM is not receiving enough power.

When I took my old cable apart, I found that I had conformal coated it (probably because the only housing that I had at the time was metalic) so I decided to make another cable instead of disassembling the original. I opted for the ultra cable which works with my remote and my desktop (YEA), but not with my laptop.

Have there been any updates to the ultra cable beyond those documented in the zip file from the files section that increase its voltage range?

Again, thanks for the help. Without it, I would have been awhile narrowing the problem down to a voltage incompatibility.
