Fav-Scan programmer question

Post by Tbone03045 »

In the Fav-Scan programmer, the last line of the readme says "Replace 'hh' with the hex command to put on the FAV/SCAN key."

What is this and where do I find it? This is for a 1994 remote, just want to program the fav/scan key to work like it does in the 2116 extender v2.

Thx,
Tbone

Are you working with the obsolete text file, or the special protocols spreadsheet?

At any rate, when you look at an upgrade file in KM or RM, you can see the hex code for each function, this is the code you should replace 'hh' with.

The Special Protocols spreadsheet.

By 'function', do you mean the function that I am associating the fav/scan key to? Like the 'TV' button?

I can't test this out because I'm programming this for my parents who are 2000 miles away, and I'd like to get it as correct as possible the first time.....

Do you have a KM upgrade file for this device? If so, open it up in KM then go to the Functions sheet. You'll notice that column F is entitled "Hex", this is where you'll find the hex code that you need.

Let's say that the function that you want to program to the FAV/SCAN button is called "Zoom" and the hex code for it is "F0", you would enter "F0" into the relevant spot in the special protocols spreadsheet.

You mentioned that you want to use the "TV" button. Is this a button on the original remote that selects TV mode, rather than the TV device button?

I think I see where I'm getting confused. I thought the Fav/Scan Special Protocol would reprogram the fav/scan button to work in the same mode that it works in the extenders; i.e., one push would advance to the next channel defined in the favorite list and pause, and no automatic 'scanning'.

Evidently this is not a correct assumption, it sounds like all this protocol does is assign any other function to the fav/scan button, which is not what I need to accomplish.

Is an extender the only way to achieve the functionality I described above? Don't think my parents are ready for that......

What cable box or TV tuner are you trying to control?

Many cable boxes and TVs have FAV the way you want it built into the tuner, so all the remote needs to do is send the one signal the channel tuner needs. If the channel tuner has that function, then using it is better than having the extender simulate it.

I don't know if one of the 15-1994 extenders has that feature. No special protocol has it, nor is there any simpler way to get it (assuming the feature isn't built into the tuner as described above).

Not ready for what?

Not ready to press the power key one extra time after changing batteries?

Not ready to have you program the remote to behave the way you think will be convenient for them, with far more flexibility than you'd have without the extender, including (if you're a fan of OEI's design decisions) the flexibility to duplicate almost all the behaviors of the unextended remote?
