OK new to this - need a little advice.

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

OK new to this - need a little advice.

Post by pinter75 »

Hi,

After searching for a remote to control my system, I have decided to go with the one4all Kameleon. Now being in the UK with only the 4 or 6 versions on sale - an 8 was sourced from the USA. Now I know this comes with USA codes only and the UK modem updates won't work as the remote identifier for an 8 won't exist. So after a bit of research I find JP1 :-)

Great stuff, I have no problem in making the cable, I do have a little issue with the 6 pin header being soldered on the pads - but I will overcome this.

I have downloaded all the tools I think I need. IR, RM and the RDFs from Yahoo. Now the confustion begins to creep in:

I am looking to control: Pace Digibox 2200 (soon to be SKY+), Technics EH760 stereo system, Limit DVD (no model num), LG RI-28CZ10RX TV and Sharp VC-MH711 VHS - Do UK codes exist for these devices?

I have seen that you can create wavs for modem upgrades from .txt etc. It would be cool if I could get UK codes from the net in wav, then convert them into a format for IR, change the model number and upload to the remote.

I am a little fuzzy on protocols and brands. I guess that protocols are mainly brand and not device specific? So a protocol for LG TVs will cover many models from LG?

Finally. Does the 9660 have storage for factory codes, downloaded codes, learnt codes and macro codes. So using LP1 will I be adding to the user storage section not the factory code section? I am a little concerened that if I need to upload a whole bunch of new codes for my UK gear, the 9660 will run out of storage for them.

Many thanks.

Read the help doc before going any further as this will explain how you can create upgrades for all of your UK gear.

If you need advice on how to solder the 6-pin header in, just ask as I have done it loads of times.

If you think you lack the ability to do that mod, make yourself a pogo-pin adapter instead, that's what most Kameleon users do. It's a little more awkward to use than having a modified remote, but it's another option.

I don't recall seeing Limit, but those others are common brand names in various remote control forums, so finding the codes shouldn't be hard. I don't think you need to particularly look for UK codes. Just look for those brands.

The downloadable tools only convert JP1 upgrade to .wav, they don't convert .wav to JP1 upgrade. So it's probably easier to get the info for an upgrade from sources other than a .wav file for the wrong OFA remote. Other sources are also likely to be more complete. If you really come down to a situation in which a .wav for the wrong OFA model is the only good available source, that isn't impossible just harder. You can email a .wav to me for such help if there isn't a better way.

Some brands are very consistent about the choice of protocol across models and across type of device. LG is moderately consistent about using the NECx1 and NECx2 protocols across various devices, but they aren't VERY consistent. There are several exceptions in their choices of protocols.

The factory setup codes are in permanent memory that can't be changed by JP1.

Macros and KeyMoves are together in one section of memory that JP1 users tend to exceed if they don't pay some attention to the limit. You avoid exceeding it either by using upgrades instead of KeyMoves where you have the choice, or by installing extra software called an "extender".

The learned signals are in another section of memory that non JP1 users tend to exceed. With JP1 you can use KeyMoves or parts of upgrades to reduce the need for learned signals.

The upgrade area (what you seem to be asking about) is large enough for most JP1 users. You might be able to use upgrade setup codes for every device you want to control, use no built-in setup codes, and still not fill the upgrade area. It isn't unlimited, so some JP1 users will hit that limit and need a fair amount of care and imagination in order to fit everything they want.

Steve
Hopefully, you will share those codes with the rest of us. To do this, please download your current memory image and post the file for us to look at. Please then state what each upgrade actually controls.

Sure,

I have just ordered my JP1 cable & pogo from filebug. I will be figuring out and uploading UK specific sets of codes for all my gear.

Steve.
