While trying to decode the A/C learns from this thread, I first tried importing the ICT file using RMIR but it just says "There are no signals to convert", so next, I opened the file using IRScope and exported into Pronto format, then tried cutting and pasting the code into RMIR and I got the following message:

Malformed Pronto signal: Burst SPACE duration out of range for format 0

I did various edits to the signal to see what might be causing it and eventually discovered that the leadout time was too long. Given that the leadout time on a sent-once signal is essentially meaningless, is there any way the software could just round this up to whatever the maximum allowable value is?

I think you have forgotten the facility I added especially for this situation. The "There are no signals to convert" message comes when you try to import as a device upgrade an ict file of signals of an unknown protocol. This cannot be done, a device upgrade requires a specific protocol.

I added the following. Open RMIR, do not load any file but instead go to Advanced > Import Ict as Learned. Select the ict file and it opens in a special (fictitious) remote with the ict signals imported on the Learned Signals tab, ready for you to use the Timing Analysis facility to analyze them.

You're right, I had forgotten where it was. May I suggest that if you open an ict file from RM, it should go the upgrade route, but if you open it from RMIR, it should go the learned route?

I can confirm that it does import them via the Advanced option.

So what about when I tried to paste in the pronto hex as an individual learned button? Below is an example of the A/C/ learns, where it's just the final byte (4A46) that causes it to choke, if I edit it to 0A46 it works.

What you are doing is starting with a timing list in the .ict file, converting it to Pronto in IRScope, converting the Pronto to UEI Learned Signal format in RMIR and converting that back to a timing list by the timing summary. You are unlikely to arrive back at the list you started with. What the Advanced menu item does is avoid all these conversions and keep the timing list of the .ict file unchanged, which is much superior.

If you really want to do that, it is not surprising that some incompatibilities arise, as the formats are all very different. Can I make the Pronto to UEI Learned truncate space durations that exceed the UEI format maximum, yes. Can I do that only for the final space duration of a signal, no. That is not how the learned signal format works. All over-long space durations will be truncated.

I see three ways of handling the truncation: (1) just do it automatically, with no notification, (2) show a dialog box when this situation is found, asking whether to do it and continue, or (3) create a new option, to truncate always/never. I don't like (1) as I don't like invisible fixes. My preference is for (2) but you don't like dialog boxes. I think (3) is too black and white. Your views, please.

No. It is a general feature that if you open in RMIR a file in a format that RM supports, such as a .rmdu file, then it opens a new instance of RM for that file. The "learned route" is extremely advanced and would confuse most users. However, the message "There are no signals to convert" is inaccurate and unhelpful. It really means that there are no signals that it can import as their protocol is unknown. I will replace this with a better message that mentions that the menu item "Advanced > Import Ict as Learned" can import such signals for analysis. That way you will get a reminder if you forget next time.

I would be happy if RM were to edit all times (not just the leadout) that exceed the maximum and in this case I wouldn't mind a pop-up, it's the pop-ups that happen all the time that get annoying, especially if you have to click 3 or 4 of them away just to do one thing.

I almost certainly will forget where the ICT import thing is hidden as I won't use it often and to me it's not a logical place for it, so a reminder prompt would be most helpful.

Done. Please try development build 10 in the usual folder to see if it meets your needs.

Tested, it works, thanks Graham.
