URC-7780 reseting

Post by aberguerand »

Hello all,
Got my old 7780 out of its drawer to teach my Harmony extended codes for my new Yamaha RX-V685 amp.

Things went well for several learning sessions. Unfortunately at some time while downloading an upgrade via the WAV interface, the remote kept indicating "Downloading Now" even when the speaker had stopped chirping and was not responding to any key press.

So I removed the batteries.

Since then, as soon as I put the batteries back, the backlight lits up and the power button flashes forever, no response to any key press.

I tried to let it without batteries for several hours, putting fresh batteries, etc. with no result.

So I suspect the remote's memory is corrupted, but i cannot perform any reset as the Magic touch is not working.

Is there a way to reset it or is it bricked ?

Hi Alain, you mentioned that you are using WAV files and the modem, does that mean that you don't have a JP1.x cable for this remote? I'll let one of the experts say whether they think it can be fixed, but I'm going to guess that a fix will require a cable.

Good news is you can get a cable for under $6 US here:

Thanks Rob for the answer !

I grabbed the oldest PC I found in the basement that still had a serial port, and spent a few hours  installing Windows 7 on it (the most difficult part was getting Java 8 to run on it).

Then my old JP1.x serial cable worked like a charm with the latest version of RMIR and unbricked the 7780 8-)

I'm definitely going to buy a modern USB JP1.x cable !

Well done. So what did you actually do to un-brick it?

With the JP1.x serial cable plugged in, the remote was detected by RMIR and I could upload a valid configuration.
