6131 Remote - What EEPROM to use?

I have read about the 2k, 4K and I am not sure I understand what they mean. Is 2K the 24c02 part? Does anyone have the DigiKey part number?

Also if I wanted to splurge for the 4K would it hurt anything if I never used it?

Last thing, does anyone know the part that OFA puts in the remote if you send it in for an upgrade?

Unless we very specifically say otherwise, we discuss eeprom sizes in BYTES. But eeprom model numbers represent the size in BITS. A 24c02 is 2K BITS, not 2K bytes.

I know a 6131 works well with a 2K BYTE eeprom (16K bits). I think it also works with a 1K byte eeprom. I think it doesn't work with anything smaller than 1K bytes. I know it doesn't work with anything bigger than 2K bytes.

Thanks for the info. I guess the 100KHz speed is plenty fast?
Is the voltage a 2.7Volts? I see some work 2.7-5.0 Volts.

In the old Yahoo JP1 photo section there is a picture of the 6012W remote with a 24c64N SC27. I assume this is 2.7 volts and 64Kbits or 8Kbytes.

If you send in your URC-6131 for an upgrade, they will replace it with a remote that has a 1k chip onboard (24C08). I recommend that you use a 2k chip (24C16) as that will give you TONS of upgrade memory.

I can sell you a chip for $2 shipped if you need.

Support for eeproms bigger than 2k bytes varies by family of remote. Most don't support it at all. They can't even use the first 2k of a 4k chip. The 4k (or larger) chip will fail entirely.

One family of UEI remote (some of the kameleons, if I remember correctly) has true support for 4k eeproms and will use a 4K or the first 4K of a larger eeprom properly even without JP1 and isn't too hard to tweak via JP1 to use more than 4K.

The family including the 6012 has broken support for 4K eeproms and can use 4K or larger only with some JP1 tricks.

The 6131 is a family of remote with no support for 4K+
