OK, at least we know that the remote isn't totally dead. The processor also apparently goes into the Reset state when RTS is set, which is the desired behavior. Next question is can the remote go into communication mode?
Code:
1) Set RTS      (Puts remote into Reset state)
2) Set Break    (The interface cable TxD line is held high)
3) Clear Reset  (Allows the remote to run, and since break is set, it should enter communication mode)
4) Clear Break  (Allows the interface to transmit to the remote)

After this sequence, if the remote starts randomly transmitting again, it's toast. If it is quiet, go to the Send tab, enter V in the box just below the tab names, and click the Send ASCII button on the same line as the box. We hope it responds 31793179.

Plugged the remote into serial port and get no response whatsoever --the transmitting I had yesterday has has also ceased so I believe it is a goner.
Many thanx for all the help and advice -at least I learnt a few things!

Probably, but another possibility is that the batteries have died, if it really was trying to transmit continuously via the 6 pin connector.
