I've been using JP1 remotes for many years now. From an 8080, 8811, 8910, and currently the RCRP05B. Unfortunately, all have the same long-term issue: I have to replace them after 2-3 years because some keys just become unusable (unresponsive or taking 1-3 seconds to respond). I open them up, try to clean them, and they may work well for a few hours or days or weeks, but it eventually becomes too annoying. I'm usually able to replace them once, but by the second time, they are out of production and I have to set up an all new remote.

I just had to replace the two 05's I was using (living room and bedroom). On both, the CABLE button was very slow if inoperable, and page down was also intermittent. On one, the right arrow was also hard to use.

As far as cleaning, I usually do nothing more than using a micro-fiber or similar to try and clean up all the oils. I once used 'citrus' cleaner on a remote's rubber membrane, and it shrank the membrane. I also tried soap and water.

Any ideas on keeping the keys working cleanly for a long time?

Also, any ideas on a new model that could replace it without too much work? I bought the two 05's a few months ago, and they came in plastic bags with the instructions and store card inside. I recently checked Amazon, and they are pretty much gone and the few left are expensive. I do have one 05 left that I've had for awhile that is unmodified so I can do the occasional learning if needed.

I do use extenders, mainly for LKP on the device keys (LKP is used to send the codes to turn on/use all the specified devices.)

Remote chart http://www.hifi-remote.com/wiki/index.php?title=RemoteChart shows models which have extenders

Comcast 1067BX3 looks similar to RCRPO5B but what about Insignia 67100, or the fairly recent URC 6440 (a euro model)?

Clean the membrane and board with alcohol. Should get a couple more years out of them. OARUSB04G has dome contacts which may be more durable, but no extender.

if you have a spray contact cleaner, use that to clean the board. Before you discard a remote due to worn out buttons, you could try superglueing a small piece of tinfoil to the bottom of the unresponsive buttons. I've never done it myself, but conceptually it should work.

The current RCRP05 remote has 'carbon' pads on the PCB. Is it safe to use contact cleaner on them? The 8910 had gold pads. I tried super-gluing foil to the membrane of one bad key, but it didn't stick.
