I'm big into Christmas Light Displays and am watching the thread on hacking Disney's Mouse Ears with great interest.

My question is which remote is a good one to buy?

This is for proof of concept to do this for real I'm thinking I'll need a more powerful transmitter.

So today I picked up the oarusb04g from Radio Shack. Has a nice USB connector and I can see the settings.bin file on the remote.

What I want to do is to be able to send some codes through the remote to control my mickey mouse ears that have an IR sensor that controls the color of the ears.

I'd like to press 0 and have it send 0x90 61 F8 for example.

I've installed IR (can't connect) and Remote Master, but haven't exactly figured out how to map this sequence to a button and load it onto the remote. I'm not very JP1 savy, and am trying to do this to do something really cool with the RGB lights built into the hats.

Any helps tips, pointers very much appreciated.

This is what I'm working on (8:41) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ElmObzUvYg

That one doesn't work with Remote Master. If you want an actual JP1 remote, the RCA RCRP05BR is best. I think Radio Shack has those as well, so you could just do an exchange.

Would the following be a good cable to use with the RCA rcrp05br?

GearMo® USB to 3.3v TTL Header like FTDI TTL-232R-3V3

Probably. But I prefer this one since you can easily rework the pins to fit, and it's less than half the price:

Thanks to the experts, OARUSB04G, URC6440, and other JP1 remotes which use Simpleset.com have recently become JP1 remotes.

An advantage is that they don't require a special JP1 cable because a USB cable is supplied http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15638
