Hello:

Has anyone made a code for the RCA CED player models SGT250 and SJT300 that were on the market circa 1983? I found a code in the library for the Hitachi VIP201P CED player (identical code for some early LaserDisc players) but not for these RCA models.

I have found that there were four universal remote controls on the market around 1997 that can control the SGT250/SJT300 CED players. These remotes are the URC-8080, the URC-8090, the 15-1918, and the 15-1919. These were programmed by loading LaserDisc code 128 into a function button on the unit. Now since CED and LaserDisc are not the same thing, it looks like One-for-All (and thus RadioShack) disabled the CED code 128 in subsequent models upon realizing the mistake.

Another interesting thing about these early CED players is that I've never found a learning remote that can learn the codes from the SGT250 or SJT300 player remotes. The learning remotes have no trouble with the later SJT400 model, but these earlier CED players use an odd IR protocol.

Since the URC-8080 and 8090 have standard JP1 interfaces, maybe someone has already extracted the code for "RCA LaserDisc 128." The RadioShack 15-1918 and 15-1919 don't have the 6-pin JP1 built-in, but they do implement the CED Pause function that is lacking in the One-for-All models.

I have just loaded two files for this:
RCA_Video_Disc_S3C8.txt - this is for most current JP1 remotes
RCA_Video_Disc_6805.txt - this is for older non-LCD remotes (eg, 15-1925, URC-7070, etc)
RCA_Video_Disc_740.txt - this is for older LCD remotes (eg, 15-1995, URC-9800, etc)

The reason for the three files is that the EFCs are completely different for each of the three main MCU processors.

These upgrades only have 5 buttons defined, do the original remotes have more buttons than that?

The original SGT250/SJT300 remotes were pure analog with only five buttons - Pause and four buttons providing two Fwd/Rev search speeds. Some pictures and a circuit layout can be seen on this page:

That's why I love the internet, every hobby imaginable has some expert somewhere who maintains a web site about it, of course, my hobby is remotes, but there's obviously a little underworld of CED users out there too.

Sgt, give those codes a try and let me know if they work. Just out of curiosity, which JP1 remotes do you have? Also, just FYI, you can modify your old 15-1918 and 15-1919 remotes to be JP1 compatible if you like.

I've got the 15-1918, 15-1919, and URC-8090 JP1 remotes that directly support CED players, as well as an RCA RCU810. It seems appropriate to get this modern RCA-labeled unit to support the RCA CED players from 20 years ago.

I have a question about the 15-1925 remote. This looks just like the 15-1918, but its manual doesn't list the "RCA LaserDisc 128" code. Is it still possible to load this code into the VCR or AUX1 buttons, and then use the 15-1925 remote on CED players?

The reason I ask is that some CED enthusiasts will just want to get these remotes that directly support CED rather than implementing a JP1 interface.

Even though there are physical differences between them, internally, the 15-1918, 15-1919, 15-1925 and One For All URC-7070 are all absolutely identical, so if a setup code is present in one of them it will be present in all of them.

The strange thing is, the EFCs used for the code in the RCU810 are completely different to the EFCs in the other remotes, that's why I created two versions of the code.

Could you try loading these codes into your remotes (even if the remote already has the LD/0128 code) and test them. Assuming that they work, it would open up a whole range of new remotes to CED enthusiats. Even if they don't want to go the JP1 route, they can buy remotes like the URC-8910 and have the code added over the phone, or they can buy remotes like the URC-6011 and have the code added by sending the remote into OFA.

I'd also be happy to pre-load the code into any of the JP1 remotes that I sell.

I've got some additional info for you. The protocol used by the LD/0128 code doesn't use any fixed data, so therefore you can use any setup code that happens to use this protocol and then if you re-program the buttons with advanced codes, you'll be able to control your CED player.

However, the version in the newer remotes uses a different set of advanced codes to the version used in the old remotes.

Setup codes that can be used include TV/0135 and TV/0213.
