Disappearing Extender?? Remote reverts to non-extender mode

Post by sic0048 »

I have a 8910 remote that I've programed with the extender. The remote works great, but recently it "looses" the extender occationally. What I mean is that you will pick up the remote, and it will work without the extender software. It works as expected in this mode (you can even hold down the setup key and change codes, learn functions etc). However, when you hit the TV Power button, it resets the extender software (as if I had just downloaded the extender and needed to activate it). This hasn't really caused any problems, but I find it weird that it would be happening. I know the remote is randomly switching modes on its own (I first suspected a family member messing up the remote and downloading the extender to cover their tracks) because I've been using it as normal and pick it up a minute or two later to change something, only to find that it has reverted back to non-extender mode and I'll have to reset the extender by pressing TV Power.

I haven't tried resetting the remote and downloading the extender again, but will do so. But I just wanted to throw this out to the group to see if anyone else has experienced this in the past.

The extender is more sensitive to certain configuration errors than a non extender remote would be. Things like a keymove using a nonexistent setup code are often involved in symptoms such as you describe.

I don't know about the 8910, but the 15-2104 has some design flaws in the battery cover, so that it doesn't do as much to prevent the batteries from moving as it ought to. I've kludged some things to improve matters, but I still accidentally deactivate my extender on occasion, and it is always because the batteries shift enough that they can then disconnect for a moment as you start to use the remote (and reconnect fast enough that the only symptom you're likely to notice is the extender has deactivated).

Do you need to reload from IR or can you just press POWER (or whatever button is used) to re-activate the extender?

I need to reload from IR.....even if I press the power button again to "reactivate" extender it doesn't do it. ie it does not give the 4 blinks on the LED.

Pressing buttons still sends some kind of signal because I see the LED blink....but they don't seem to be doing anything.

FYI, I thought it may be weak batteries so I put in new bats, reloaded IR and a few days later....nothing....kaput...

Any more information on this problem available? I am having the same problem with my 9910 for the past month or so. The remote worked perfectly for about a year and then this problem 'seemed' to start shortly after I made a configuration change and starting using the device combiner and double keypress facility. Now, every so often (from 1hr to 1 day) the remote will loose the extender and I have to pop a battery out and then put it back in and press power to make it work again. Any ideas?
