First let me say thank you to the forum members that make this information available to the masses. I respect your knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help others like myself. I am in need of reducing the number of remotes required to operate my HT system. I am running out of room on my side table!

I have been reading for about a week. Purchased the RS 2116 on Thrusday and ordered the USB JP1 cable. Downloaded IR, KM, JP1 flowchart. It's just a matter of time before I can start to experiment with making changes to the remote.

My system consists of TV, DVD, A/V Rcvr, CD 300 disk changer, C Band SAT and a VCR. So far I have been able to get everything but the A/V Rcvr to do at least a few things with the codes provided with the remote. The Rcvr is pretty new and does not have a code listed in the remote instructions so I think this might be my biggest chlange. I have not tried to call RS and see if the already have a code that will work.

My question is more related to the buttons not on the 2116 that are on the original remotes, things like quick 5 second replay on the DVD, activate timer and shut off the VCR and many more. I am thinking I will be able to discover these codes in the "learn" mode then assign them to buttons. How the heck am I going to remember what I assigned where?

I am sure I will have more questions as I slowly progress and wanted to thank everyone involved in advance.

Hi Dan,

Do what I do, go and buy a binder with A4/Letter size plastic pockets from your local office supply store, the when you have set up a device in KM just hit the Key Map tab and select PRINT.

Do this for each device, place each sheet in the binder and you have a handy reference manual for your remote.

If you try and assign the buttons logically, you will find that you usually only have to refer to the list for the more obscure functions you only use occasionally.

I guess the best thing to do is decide which keys you really want. There is no sense in putting key functions on the 2116 that you'll never use. I set up macros to do things like turn off the VCR and switch inputs of the TV and Receiver. Then one button does the functions. It makes controlling the system easy enough that my wife can work the whole system and she can't operate a computer. Let's just say it's user friendly. I don't know about you but I'm not to fond of having to reference a file to figure out how to operate the remote. Keep it simple and make it easy for all. Some keys make sense to assign functions to. For instance, the enter button on when my Replay is on gives me a 30 second skip ahead. Pressing a number key and then the enter button gives me the number of minute skip. If I push 3 and then enter it skips ahead 3 minutes. My remote is the 1994. The enter button is just above the fast forward button. On the opposite side of the remote is the TV/VCR button which is right above the rewind button. When I press the TV/VCR button I get a 7 second rewind. I can quickly skip commercials with the use of these to buttons. Since the TV/VCR button is being used for this I use the swap button on the remote to change the Replay inputs. Swap made sense to me for this function. It's all a matter of how you want it set up. That is one of the powers of this JP1 world.
Your receiver should be no problem. If you do not have a code, then learn a few keys and look at them in IR. You should be able to find out the protocol and device numbers. The learned key will show you the EFC for the key. Write down all the EFC and what keys they belong to for the learned keys. Then go back to the learning process and learn the rest. Write down the EFC's for the rest of the keys. Now you have what you need for the KM spreadsheet. You can create your own code number. Usually at higher than 1000, to prevent goofing up a normal code. You enter the data in the KM spreadsheet and assign the functions to the keys you like. When it looks all complete, you save it and copy the upgrade code info into the IR program. Then you upload to the remote and see what a good job you did. If you don't like it go back and modify it as much as you like. Redo the IR step and the upload and try again. Good luck and happy JP1ing.
