I really try to use the usb cable for my jp1 but it is very unstable. It will connect and upload but the next time it says check batteries. I have tried everything including taking out batteries, new batteries, switching batteries. The only thing that works is to unplug the usb cable and let is sit for about a minute and then its good to go for about 1 or 2 uploads. My homemade parallel cable works perfect but I cant use it with my laptop. Any ideas? I can't be the only one with this frustration.

I don't recall anyone else having this problem, but regardless, in order for anyone to be able to help, we would need to know exactly which USB cable you have. Could you please mention where you bought the cable and if the seller offers more than one cable for sale, which cable you bought.

I purchased the jp1 usb about 5 or 6 years ago when jp1 was the only known format. I actually purchased 2 of them and they both acted the same. If I was going to guess, I may have purchased them from diygadget.com but I am not sure. I don't know how much this helps. I have also downloaded the most current drivers. I'm using ir 8.03. with windows 7 although it acted the same with my other computer with xp.

If you mean that you have two interface cables and they both give the same error, then it is unlikely that there is a poor connection or other new hardware problem. So it is probably worthwhile to try the WinUSB driver that we developed a year or two ago. I don't think we have seen your particular error before, but replacing the Delcom driver has helped with some other errors.

The instructions explain some of the motivation for using the WinUSB driver, and also explain how to determine if you have a 32 or 64 bit operating system. Once that is understood, you can download and install either the 32 or 64 bit driver.

32 bit driver

64 bit driver

This is what Tommy's cable looks like

In my not so humble opinion, if it doesn't look like that then there's no assurance in reliability.

eferz,
That picture is of a Tommy Tyler JP1.3 flash cable. His JP1 cable doesn't have LEDs and is grey, I believe.

True. At least, Tommy has an adapter available for that cable to program the older JP1 EEPROM remotes.

Okay, the battery tricks are for the JP1 LPT simple interface not the USB. The JP1 USB cable requires good batteries. I do know that the upload/download process puts a heavy drain on the batteries. If my batteries are not fresh, I can get 1 or 2 downloads and then the interface doesn't work anymore.

So far every problem I've had with JP1 remotes has been fixed with new batteries, but it sure is worth a shot.

Does your cable have a separate gray box for the circuitry? If so, it probably is a diygadget cable, as I think all of Tommy's cables have always had the circuitry hidden in the USB end of the cable.

mine looks just like the one with the grey box. For what it's worth. I seem to get connections without unplugging by using a 4 port hub, and when the fault comes up, I have been using the tab to check interface- it shows ok then it will work for 1 or 2 more times.
