Basic level knowledge needed.

I may have bitten off more than I can chew. I'm having a hard time understanding the "layers" that seem to be required to program a JP1 remote.

When I say layers I mean:

It seems that each manufacture (sony) has a different code for each TYPE of device(TV, DVD, VHS).

It seems each device can ...

Have you tried the discrete commands for wide and normal found on Rob Humphries excellent Sony site under TV's device 164. They don't work in all Sony TV's but do in some models. Here is hRob H.'s note:

I have discovered on Remote Central that the Normal and Wide discrete HD mode codes do work on ...

Cheapest LEARNING remote??

Whats the best "BANG FOR THE BUCK" learning JP1 remote?

I just need the CHEAPEST one possible to learn some commands from OEM remotes, then to upload them to my PC, so I can use the codes on my URC 6131.

Please let us know what you are trying to accomplish, 'cause I think you are going at this in the wrong way.

My TV has a HD mode (16x9), that has to be MANUALLY selected via the TV remote. To select 16x9 mode or 4x3, I have to fish my way thru the menu of the TV using the remote. (A series of UP ...

OK...I added "TV" first, so it switched to the TV, executed my macro, but how do I go back to the previous mode automatically? I need this to work in three modes, TV, PVR and DVD.

CAll me an idiot, I see the macro tab, but cant seem to figure out the process.

I know Bound key is the key I want assigned my macro.

Now what does MACRO DEFINITION mean?
How does the MACRO know that I want the TV volume vs say the AUX volume?

OK, I created my macro, but how do I have it use ...

On a side note and a LONG SHOT, I was thinking of POSSIBLY meeting with our AMP rep or TYCO rep during one of our regular meeting and see how much it would be to have a RJ45 TYPE connector made custom that would allow us to use the standard crimp and cutting tools for networking but instead of the ...

Yes you can use CAT5 cable, any old cable would do, there are no special requirements.

As for the IDC, I have no idea where you would find one in the next hour, so I recommend that you simply cut a larger IDC down to size (ie, like the kind you might use for a hard drive cable). I believe there ...

Tommy Tyler invented a device that can be built for around $40 that you can use to capture signals using your PC and decode them, but as that's twice the cost of a URC-8811, the idea never really took off.

So I can buy this URC 8811 and LEARN the code, then read it via JP1 to see what it learned ...

I attached an IR receiver from a VCR to the parallel port on my PC (you can use the JP1 cable actually, you just have to turn off the output bit).
I wrote software to scope, and eventually to decode IR signals, providing hex codes or EFCs to plug into KM or IR.

This despite the fact that my ...

To use these phantom device buttons, you need to program macros that have either dev7 or dev8 in the steps.

I usually program two macros for you, which I assign to shifted device buttons, but you could re-assign these to the THUMBS buttons (for example) if you like.

Yep, there they are under ...

URC 6131 * DEVICE remote???

Hello! I just got my URC 6131 from Rob, (Thanks again!) and built my JP1 cable at lunch and downloaded and tested my work.

I was able to download my configuration (Yeah! It worked!) but noticed that there are 2 extra items on the GENERAL device buttons.
I have a DEV 7 and DEV 8.

Are these real? can ...
