Lurker, thank you for the problem report (although it was somewhat hard to understand at first  ).

The problem is that I invoked RMIR's setup.sh, which is not written to be invoked without an attached terminal; as you see, it loops. I have rewritten my script not to use that script, just ...

To use a USB serial interface with RMIR, you need to be a member of the
dialout group. Currently you are not a member. This script can add you
to that group but you will need to give your sudo password. Do you want
it to add you to that group?

Loss of this site would be sad for me. I use my JP1 remotes every single day, although I only check in here on rare occasions when something isn't working right, or I need to change something and have forgotten how.

Don't discount the site's worth based on the number of days between posts. My usage ...

Whatever happened with your chart updates?
It looks like Jim's last update to the chart was on Jan 21, 2023, and Jim's last visit to these forums was on Mar 28, 2023, so I suspect that real life has got in the way of him making updates

Were there any particular updates that you were looking to ...

Just to be sure we are all on the same [Wiki] page, there are currently two charts on the RemoteChart page:
Popular and Current remotes, which I call the small chart
Original Chart, including older remotes, which I call the big chart
I am adding a row for any RDF signature I can identify as ...

If POWER is an on/off toggle (like most are), be aware that it is very easy to get out of sync. Your in-laws will be confused and frustrated if pressing power turns the Denon on and the Vistron off. Then pressing it again turns the Denon off and the Vistron on.

Also, it is almost always necessary ...

DSM is Device-Specific-Macro. Extenders for older remotes do indeed make both DSM and regular macros much, much faster.

Unfortunately, current remotes (including Inteset 422-3) are all too slow and cannot be sped up. Older fast remotes can still be found on Ebay, for example https://www.ebay.com ...

What I have always done is put steps in the EVERYTHING OFF macro that resets the TV to the desired turn-on state just prior to turning it off. So then I never have to wait for pauses when turning it on.

I think "still find in stores or on ebay at least" is a good criteria for "current" remotes. I would include discontinued models that are still available in new condition (such as ATLAS). Leave out used-only models.

Thanks Jim for updating the chart. It will be a big improvement to have a small ...
