One other quick suggestion, your Onkyo might have a IR in jack on the back, if so use that with a 2.5mm (9910box) to 3.5mm (Onkyo) MONO cable to see if it works better (usually does for me).
Oh and are you trying to use the little flasher or the actual box as the flasher? I have found replacing ...
